September is almost over, and so is the summer. In just three days, the transition of the autumnal equinox will gracefully draw a curtain on the cherished season of abundance, the season of 'more': more leisure, more light, more time.
What impact does this moment have on you? In relation to this moment of the year, if you focus your attention on your thoughts, emotions, and body, what do you notice?
This article is dedicated to those of us who are feeling overwhelmed at the thought of returning to the work/life routine, and are looking for some motivation to go back and own it with confidence and resilience.
You enjoyed your summer break, take a moment to appreciate yourself for it.
Let's begin by acknowledging what a fantastic idea it was for you to take that thoroughly deserved summer break:
The exposure to sunlight, allows our bodies to produce vitamin D. Vitamin D is essential for calcium absorption and bone health. It also plays a role in mood regulation and may help alleviate symptoms of depression.
Sunlight and warm weather can also stimulate the production of serotonin, a neurotransmitter that contributes to feelings of well-being and happiness. This can lead to an improvement in mood and overall mental health. We eat better, in fact, summer often brings a shift in dietary habits towards lighter, fresher foods like fruits and vegetables. A healthy diet can have a positive impact on mood and overall well-being.
When on holiday or just simply spending more time the outdoor more often, our stress level drops dramatically too, being in contact with nature has shown to have a not only a calming but also healing effect on our mind. We also tend to increase our social interactions, something that can boost mood and reduce feelings of isolation or loneliness that we may feel during those gloomy and colder autumn/winter days.
Remember you've earned this. You dedicated yourself to hard work throughout the year and chose to prioritise your mental and physical well-being as a reward. This demonstrates self-love, and it's important to show gratitude and appreciation towards yourself for making this choice.
The back-to-school anxiety phenomenon.
Focus on this feeling you may experience now that you’re back to the routine after indulging in more calmness, selfcare and happiness… does it feel familiar?
It’s called back-to-school-anxiety, a very common phenomenon spread across adults. It evokes memories of the apprehension you felt as a child when you had to return to school.
It's as if you're hearing the voice of that little child within you, resonating throughout your body. While as a child, you had your own concerns—homework, exams, and fitting in with peers—as an adult, you're faced with a different set of responsibilities. The weight of work, family, and daily life can sometimes feel daunting.
You’re not alone. Here are a few examples of common reasons why you may feel as you do right now:
Return to a Hectic Work Environment: The thought of returning to a demanding and stressful work environment can be overwhelming. People may worry about the workload, pending tasks, deadlines, and the pressures they'll face upon returning to work. The anticipation of dealing with work-related stressors can contribute to anxiety.
Lack of Self-Care Time: When individuals have enjoyed a break or vacation that allowed them more time for self-care and relaxation, the thought of returning to a routine that leaves less time for self-love and personal care can be anxiety-inducing. The contrast between the holiday experience and the daily grind can lead to feelings of unease.
Transition Back to Responsibilities: The transition from a carefree holiday mindset to resuming everyday responsibilities and commitments can be challenging. Thoughts about managing household chores, family responsibilities, and other obligations can create anxiety, especially when they disrupt the leisurely holiday routine.
Financial Concerns: Holiday expenses can lead to worries about financial stability and budgeting. Thoughts about credit card bills, overspending, or upcoming financial responsibilities can contribute to anxiety.
Social and Relationship Pressures: Some individuals may experience post-holiday anxiety related to social or relationship pressures. This could include concerns about reconnecting with friends or loved ones after a holiday break or dealing with conflicts or tensions that may have arisen during the vacation.
Health and Fitness Concerns: After indulging in holiday treats and relaxation, some people may worry about getting back on track with their health and fitness routines. Thoughts about resuming a healthier lifestyle can lead to anxiety if they feel overwhelmed by the prospect.
You’ve got this.
Let's reconnect with that inner child's voice. What if you were to pause for a moment and really listen to that voice?
The key to overcoming these feelings lies in acknowledging that inner voice, in embracing your inner child with love and compassion. By being receptive to the whispers of that inner voice, you validate your true emotions, thoughts, and physical sensations. This means you're not brushing them aside; you're demonstrating care, a true act of self-love. By cultivating self-love, you'll find it much easier to conquer those negative, overwhelming thoughts, as you'll discover your most steadfast ally is none other than yourself.
By tuning in to that inner voice, you'll gain greater clarity about your genuine needs, making it simpler to chart a path toward feeling better. Ask yourself: "What lies within my control?"
Self-awareness is your greatest power. Knowing your position within, in relation to every aspect of your life, empowers you to take steps that align with your true self and desires. You'll illuminate the darkness and suddenly see what was once obscured. You'll realise that, regardless of external factors, you are in control and not subject to the whims of outside forces in your life.
